Review of Asda Energy Prices for Electricty and Gas
The giant UK supermarket Asda offer their customers energy products through their switch and save scheme. Here’s our review of their product and pricing.
Most supermarkets have jumped on the bandwagon for saving money on electricity and gas and the Asda energy scheme from their financial services arm are no exception.
How does the Asda Energy Scheme Work?
It’s a completely free search of all the energy companies in the UK and is operated by a company called EnergyLinx so is in effect just an affiliate product where Asda earn a fee for each customer that signs up on the EnergyLinx website.
They estimate that on average you could save around £216 on your dual fuel bills as this was the average saved for all customers during 2009.
Like all price comparison websites it’s very easy to get a quote. You can either use their simple online form where you only need your postcode, your current supplier and some information about your energy usage (which can either be how much you spend on fuel each year or the actual consumption figures – so a current bill will be very useful to you).
You can also call up one of their advisers at a UK call centre who can undertake the entire process on your behalf. Once you have provided the information you’ll get a list of energy companies and their various tariff types so you can choose which one is best for your circumstance.
How easy is this process and what about switching ?
These days both the internet and the internal processes within the energy companies have made both the quoting process and switching of supplier extremely easy. So long as you are not currently tied into an existing fixed price or capped deal (where there are usually penalties for breaking the contract) then you are free to switch.
The switching process will be undertaken by your new electric and gas provider and if you have any problems then the nice folks from the Asda call centre can help you with any of the details that need to be completed.
What types of tariffs are available from Asda energy ?
Well the answer to this question is really – anything. Because Asda energy is an intermediary stage they are simply looking at all of the prices and tariffs that are on offer in the market place and calculating your annual bill based on the information you have provided. So if you have seen a new tariff in the news or someone has told you about one then it will be listed together with all the others.
Generally you’ll be able to choose from the following types of tariffs:
- Standard variable priced tariff (normally the most expensive)
- % discounts for a fixed period
- Fixed prices for a fixed period
- Dual fuel tariffs with discounts
- Green renewable energy tariffs (sometimes the same as standard but someones with a premium price)
Additionally if you can always pay your bills via monthly direct debit because you’ll always get an additional discount this way. With most energy companies you can also manage your account online and provide your own meter readings and this ensures you won’t get any high estimated bills in the future.
So give Asda energy switch and save a go but it’s likely to give the same prices as any other price comparison site and there are no particular advantages or special offers by using this service.
